Have the Best Workshop Ever!-Part 1

This is the first in a series of posts about getting the most out of your IT Training workshop experience. I’ve taught a few workshops, and assisted many. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t work for our participants.  This post is about what you can do to start off on the right foot when you take an IT Training workshop.

1. Check in with the assistant before you take your seat.

The assistant sits at the back of the room.  He or she will be happy to greet you, and make sure you get checked off on the workshop roster. You’ll want to get checked off so you’re credited with being there.  Also, when there are workshops scheduled concurrently in the IC 103 classroom, and in one of the library clusters at IUB, you may be walking into the wrong room. The assistant will let you know if you’re in the right place.

 2. Leave your computer logged on.

We log in all of the computers using a workshop account before class. This gives you access to the exercise files in the EP Class folder. If you log out and log back  in as yourself, you won’t see this folder. The assistant will have to come over and log you in, possibly causing you to miss some important information.

3. Watch the 2nd Screen.

IT Training no longer provides printed workshop materials. It saves trees! Instead, we download a copy of the materials to the secondary monitor at each workstation in the classroom. You can use this copy during the workshop, and you can even take notes in the PDF and then email it to yourself after class. Watch this tutorial to learn how to take notes in your PDF.

If you prefer to have a paper version of the materials, download and print them ahead of  time. If you’re a tablet user, download and read from your own device.

Those were some simple tips for getting your workshop started off right.  Be on the lookout for the next post in the series in which I’ll discuss strategies for keeping up while the workshop is in session.
